City University’s Mediation and Arbitration Center and the International Council for Arbitration: A Strategic Partnership to Promote a Culture of Peaceful Dispute Resolution

Dr. Edgar Rizk, President of City University, met with a group of lawyers holding law degrees and doctorates in law at a seminar on alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation and arbitration, at the Arjaan Rotana Hotel in Al-Rouche.
During the seminar, the attendees discussed the global trend of companies, economic and investment bodies, and institutions stipulating that they will not resort to national courts in the event of a dispute, and instead adopt alternative methods.
The seminar also focused on the support of states and international institutions for these parallel methods to the judiciary, through legislation and international agreements.
In Lebanon, the Civil Procedure Code and other laws govern arbitration provisions, while the Judicial and Conventional Mediation Laws are awaiting the issuance of their regulatory decrees.
Embodying the importance of these alternative methods, the Mediation and Arbitration Center was established as the first specialized university center to offer programs in mediation and arbitration, through a strategic partnership between City University and the International Council for Arbitration Lebanon.
The center aims to combine legal knowledge, technical skills, and practical training, by adopting programs that include the latest developments in these parallel methods to the judiciary locally and internationally.
In order to spread the culture of these alternative methods, City University will hold a series of seminars in its various branches in the near future.
The center will also hold an interactive seminar on arbitration and mediation laws in Lebanon entitled “Fundamentals of Alternative Dispute Resolution Methods” on Thursday, February 29, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Galaxy Complex – Furn el-Shebbak – Galerie Sehnaoui Intersection – Cinema Floor.
