The Faculty of Business Administration at City University Hosts a Lecture on the Evolution of Economic Globalization and Its Impact on Lebanon

The Faculty of Business Administration at City University organized a lecture titled “The Stages of Economic Globalization and Their Impact on Lebanon,” delivered by researcher Rami Assoum. The event was attended by the Chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, MP Faisal Karami; MP Dr. Taha Naji; the University President, Dr. Walid Dagher; Dr. Hamdi Dernaika; Ms. Najat Menkara; as well as a large gathering of traders, business leaders, and trade union representatives.

The event opened with the Lebanese national anthem, followed by a welcoming address delivered by Ms. Falak Abdel Hadi, who greeted the attendees and then invited researcher Rami Assoum to present his lecture.

In his presentation, Assoum examined the major transformations of the global economic system through the successive phases of economic globalization, highlighting their direct repercussions on the Lebanese economy—particularly in the post-Taif Agreement era, as Lebanon adopted a trajectory shaped by neoliberal economic policies.

He also discussed a range of key issues, most notably the structural causes behind the deepening of inequality, the decline of income generated by productive labor in contrast to the expansion of capital profits, arguing that these shifts have contributed to the rise of populism and identity-based politics as outcomes of broader economic and social changes.

Within the Lebanese context, Assoum pointed to the economic policies implemented after the Taif Agreement, noting that the failure to address fundamental economic questions has hindered the development of a comprehensive and integrated reform-oriented project.
