Lecture on Sustainability in Construction at the Faculty of Architecture and Design, City University
In cooperation with the Scientific Committee of the Order of Engineers, the Faculty of Architecture and Design at City University organized a specialized academic lecture entitled “2030 Sustainability Vision – LCA and EPD for All.” The lecture addressed key concepts of sustainability in the construction sector and highlighted the importance of adopting modern approaches that respond to today’s environmental challenges.
The event opened with a welcoming address by the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design, conservation architect Rayan Najjar, who emphasized the role of such academic initiatives in raising environmental awareness among students and in embedding sustainability as a way of life. She also expressed her appreciation for the Order of Engineers and its Scientific Committee for their support of scientific and knowledge-based activities that contribute to the advancement of sustainable architectural thinking.
For her part, Dr. Claudia Matar, Head of the Scientific Committee at the Order of Engineers, praised the high standard of the Architecture and Design students, commending their excellence and academic commitment, and underscoring the importance of investing in their potential and future capabilities.
The lecture was then delivered by Engineer Nahla Nehmeh, Sustainability Solutions Specialist at Saint-Gobain for the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region. She presented an integrated perspective on sustainability in the construction sector, explaining the role of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) in evaluating the environmental performance of materials and buildings, and stressing the importance of incorporating these tools into contemporary architectural practice.
The event concluded with the presentation of commemorative plaques as a gesture of appreciation to the guests, followed by group photos with faculty members, and a final collective photo with the students, in an atmosphere reflecting positive academic engagement and interaction.
