Launch of the Student Chapter of the Lebanon Green Building Council at the School of Architecture and Design – City University

The School of Architecture and Design at City University has launched the Student Chapter of the Lebanon Green Building Council (Lebanon GBC Student Chapter) during a ceremony held on campus, attended by University President Dr. Walid Dagher, the School’s Dean Eng. Rayan Najjar, as well as a distinguished group of professors and students.

The event opened with a speech by the Dean, who welcomed the attendees and highlighted the importance of promoting a culture of sustainability in architectural education. She emphasized encouraging students to adopt environmentally responsible design practices that contribute to a greener and more conscious future.

This was followed by remarks from Dr. Rabih Kabbara, Professor of Architecture at City University, member of the Lebanon Green Building Council, and the faculty advisor for the student chapter. He welcomed the university’s president, the dean, faculty members, students, and guests, stressing the significance of this initiative in advancing the principles of sustainable architecture. He also praised the Council’s efforts in supporting environmental and architectural education in Lebanon. Dr. Kabbara then offered a brief introduction to engineers Afif Nassim and Tawfic Assoum.

The program included a lecture titled “Architectural Strategy & Passive Design in the ARZ Rating System,” delivered by Eng. Afif Nassim, Vice President of the Lebanon Green Building Council, and Eng. Tawfic Assoum, a member of the Council’s Board of Directors. The session explored the ARZ 2 building rating system and its role in advancing environmentally friendly and sustainable construction.

At the end of the event, the guest speakers were honored in appreciation of their valuable contributions to environmental awareness and to promoting the principles of green architecture in Lebanon.

Ultimately, this event reflects the commitment of the School of Architecture and Design and its Student Club at City University to strengthening a culture of sustainability, engaging with national initiatives, and providing students with hands-on experiences that help prepare a responsible generation of architects dedicated to building more innovative and sustainable cities.
