City University Hosts UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, to Promote Education and Youth Empowerment

City University welcomed the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, who was received by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, MP Faisal Karami, and his wife, Mrs. Janan Karami. The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister of Defense Mrs. Zeina Akar, UN Political Advisor Mrs. Lina Al-Qudwa, University President Dr. Walid Dagher, along with a number of deans, professors, and students.

Hennis-Plasschaert began her visit with a campus tour, where she was introduced to the university’s academic programs and visited the engineering and science labs, the nursing department, and the main library.

Following the tour, she took part in an interactive discussion with faculty members, deans, and students on the UN’s role in supporting education and empowering youth in Lebanon. Students shared their thoughts on issues such as unemployment, migration, and the involvement of young people in UN programs. Hennis-Plasschaert emphasized that “the energy and potential of Tripoli’s youth are a vital asset for Lebanon and must be nurtured through vocational and university education, as well as training and employment opportunities.” She expressed her admiration for the students’ enthusiasm and engagement, describing them as an inspiring model for Lebanese youth. She also reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting digital education initiatives and women’s empowerment projects in northern Lebanon.

At the end of the visit, Dr. Walid Dagher presented Ms. Hennis-Plasschaert with an honorary shield in appreciation of her visit and her support for the university’s mission. Mrs. Janan Karami also offered her a symbolic olive tree sapling — a gesture representing peace and hope.
